It first hit the airwaves on January 11, 1940, as W2XWG, an experimental station under NBC, before evolving into a commercial outlet. The modern Hot 97 emerged on September 22, 1988, when Emmis Communications shifted its format to rhythmic contemporary, rebranding it from Hot 103.5 to 97.1 FM. Now owned by Mediaco Holding, it broadcasts from the Empire State Building, covering areas like Newark and Yonkers, and has become a cornerstone of urban music culture in the region.

The station specializes in hip hop and R&B, featuring a mix of current chart-toppers and classic hits. Its programming includes iconic shows like "Ebro in the Morning" and "Funkmaster Flex," showcasing top DJs and artists. Hot 97 remains a leading voice in New York’s music scene, available live and online.
