It first hit the airwaves on January 11, 1940, as W2XWG, an experimental station under NBC, before evolving into a commercial outlet. The modern Hot 97 emerged on September 22, 1988, when Emmis Communications shifted its format to rhythmic contemporary, rebranding it from Hot 103.5 to 97.1 FM. Now owned by Mediaco Holding, it broadcasts from the Empire State Building, covering areas like Newark and Yonkers, and has become a cornerstone of urban music culture in the region.
