It began broadcasting in February 1970 as a 10-watt station under the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications, founded to train students in broadcasting skills. Now at 500 watts, it operates from Andersen Hall, serving cities like Omaha and Kearney through its 90.3 FM signal and online platforms. Run by students with faculty oversight, it transitioned online in 2006 and added KRNU2 in 2008, reflecting its growth as a hub for independent music and sports coverage. 

The station plays a mix of indie rock and experimental music, featuring local Nebraska artists alongside national acts like The Strokes or Tame Impala. Its programming includes specialty shows, student-produced content, and live Husker sports play-by-play, appealing to a diverse audience. KRNU 90.3 FM is available live and online.
